I have had the privilege of assisting Kevin King, CEO and President of Empire Training and Consultation,
on several projects. I wholeheartedly endorse him as a passionate and effective advocate for children in the foster care system. Kevin's dedication to improving the lives of youth in care and his expertise in developing a robust staff training program strive to elevate the quality of care for vulnerable children. Kevin has continued to grow in his insight and impact as a consultant and trusted advisor to residential care providers about the critical importance of professional development for staff who work directly with young people placed away from their families. Kevin recognized the risks associated with
allegations of maltreatment by poorly trained and supervised staff and the future liabilities faced by agencies through civil litigation brought by former youth placed in facilities. Kevin offers an array of training and coaching materials he has developed to engage staff in a view of themselves as valuable
professionals dedicated to the safety, well-being, and healing of young people in care rather than simply adults who supervise children. Kevin's work is a testament to his character and unwavering belief that every child deserves a chance to thrive. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking to improve outcomes for foster care children and enhance their care programs' effectiveness.

Kevin King is a master trainer, who's chill, easy-going vibe, makes you feel like you just spent an 8-hour training with your new best friend. But this guy is highly intelligent, experienced, creative, self-aware, other-centric, and has a heart for the youth he serves that is backed up by years and years of both direct service, management and training skills. If my son or daughter were in treatment and there were 5 agencies to pick from; 4 who don't know Kevin and 1 who works closely with him, I'd choose the latter in a heartbeat. Those staff will be better trained and I would bet money, youth surveys would steer me in the same direction.

I worked with Kevin for many years creating spaces for young people and their families that were safe, affirming, and supportive of their hopes and dreams for their lives. Kevin has a rare combination of strong implementation skills and warm people/connection skills. He intuitively knows how to build things collaboratively, that work. I would highly recommend adding his wisdom to any youth-serving context.

I am delighted to commend Kevin King for his exceptional leadership at our East Oakland public school, particularly in his focus on supporting individual students with IEPs. Kevin made it a priority to train staff in practices that fostered strong relationships, enabling them to understand and effectively address the unique challenges faced by students with disabilities. His dedication to inclusivity not only enhanced academic outcomes for these students but also cultivated a school culture where every learner felt valued and supported. During my tenure as CEO of Education for Change, I witnessed how Kevin’s empathetic approach and commitment to professional development transformed our community, making it a truly nurturing environment for all students to succeed.

I have learned so much from Kevin King as someone who co-led an elementary school alongside him. Kevin has an outstanding, humble presence and his leadership qualities are inspiring and infectious. He leads with care, compassion, humor and humility, and supports those he leads to embrace these same qualities, so they are better equipped to serve their communities. As a trainer and school leader, Kevin also instills his equity mindset and advocacy for unconditional care for students and families, with an authentic and experienced voice and perspective. Kevin has an uncanny ability to get to the "heart of the matter," and helps explain complex topics in ways that are relatable to all. Kevin has been transformative in my professional journey, and I know he will be for your journey as well.

I had the pleasure of working with Kevin King for several years in my capacity as Training Coordinator for a large Foster Family Agency. Kevin trained our Residential Treatment management and line staff on multiple topics. Kevin was always engaging and informative, but it was his sense of humor that kept our staff engaged and involved in his trainings. Kevin has a way of holding the attention of his audience with his energy and enthusiasm for the topics he is teaching. His knowledge combined with his real-world experience in the field makes him uniquely qualified to train on a multitude of subjects. When planning my training calendar for the year my staff would routinely request Kevin King by name. Kevin was born to be a trainer. So, if you are looking for a top-notch trainer that will have your staff laughing and learning at the same time look no further than Kevin King.

I had the pleasure of working with Kevin King during my tenure as Board President at the Alameda County Office of Education. Kevin’s expertise as a trainer and consultant was instrumental in advancing our educational goals for the youth in Alameda County and the Oakland School District. His dedication to hiring and training exceptional staff for Cox Academy Elementary School made a significant impact, particularly for students with IEPs and those from the foster care system facing mental health challenges. Kevin’s approach not only equipped educators with vital skills but also fostered an inclusive and supportive environment for our most vulnerable students. I wholeheartedly recommend Kevin for his unwavering commitment to educational excellence.

Drawing on decades of experience in direct care and program leadership for organizations serving youth with the most complex needs, Kevin King has been teaching others how to do this work, and do it well across California and beyond. His ability to transmit and translate knowledge and skills to a wide range of audiences is second to none. And he does it all with the humor and grace that this challenging work requires.

Kevin continues to be one of the best trainers I have worked with over the past 15 years. I often encourage new trainers to attend Kevin's training to learn how to make curriculum interactive and fun, create a welcoming and safe environment for participants, structure content and activities to maximize learning, and meet individual participants where they are. Clinicians, paraprofessionals, supervisors and leaders all love Kevin's training. He can even turn boring regulatory content into fun and fulfilling workshops. Kevin's passion for sharing his experience and knowledge shines through in everything he does.

I worked with Kevin for years in residential programs for traumatized adolescents. Both programs we worked in served clients with some of the most acute symptomology in California. Kevin’s approach always included great questions, a focus on what is best for the clients, and our Seneca values including hope and joy. Kevin was my supervisor the first time I was a Clinical Director at Seneca. He coached and supported me in decision making, prioritizing needs, and learning how to be a good supervisor. I still use those lessons in my work today. Kevin has always been a strong, stable, presence at Seneca and remains calm and curious in the face of unimaginable behaviors and situations. I am grateful to have shared these experiences with him.

Clinical Director, North Bay Region, Seneca Family Of Agencies
I've worked with Kevin King over the past 27 years and have been impressed by his ingenuity, commitment to staff development and leadership in various programs and teams. Kevin began his work in high-end residential programs and quickly moved into a leadership position where he consistently applied the concepts of unconditional care with teens experiencing the most challenging times in their lives. Ultimately, Kevin became the Director of a locked unit in which his ability to nurture and develop staff became evident. Many of the staff that were in his program have now become leaders in the agency. I think a lot of the success of his teams had to do with his ability to nurture and support staff doing a very difficult job. Kevin then moved into other leadership opportunities within schools and continued to develop strong teams. His educational experience increased his understanding of learning and led to an increased ability to develop training that met the needs of individuals with various learning styles. Kevin joined the training department and immediately began developing a series of trainings to support internal staff and staff in the field. The series of trainings that he created have increased the potential for staff to be successful with children who have experienced high levels of trauma and have developed difficult behaviors. His ability to create engaging, thought-provokingcontent that included a significant amount of experiential training Has been exemplary Kevin's experience, leadership ability, and creative ability will allow him to continue to impact the lives of children, families and staff.
